How to Read Legislation

In partnership with SRP, Chris Englefield will guide you through legislation.

Most people working in Radiation Protection (RP) need to read primary or secondary legislation from time to time. Reading the words is one thing; understanding what they say and what they don’t say is something else entirely. This webinar, presented by Chris Englefield, will provide an introduction to the practical understanding of English and European legislation. The principles will be applicable in other parts of the UK.

We will start off with a guide to understanding the structure of legislation relevant to RP, to enable quicker access to the parts of interest. Then we’ll consider the meanings of key words and phrases and how to interpret words that are not defined in the legislation itself. The expected outcome is that participants will feel better able to navigate and understand any piece of legislation in the future.

Chris Englefield (Consultant)
Chris Englefield, SRP Fellow member, trained in Health Physics in the Defence Nuclear Industry and then had over 30 years working for the Regulatory Body. He is now semi-retired but operates an international consultancy to organisations, governments and universities around the world.  This webinar is based on a number of lectures previously developed for teaching RP at undergraduate level.

An Introduction to Liquid Scintillation Counting

In partnership with SRP, Dr Oliver Preedy and Dr Helen Cauldbeck from the AURPO Executive Committee will be presenting An Introduction to Liquid Scintillation Counting webinar. This webinar is for those who require an overview of how liquid scintillation counting works, sample preparation and measurement as well as how to analyse results. Other topics such as correction of erroneous results and common complications surrounding liquid scintillation counting will also be covered.

Dr Helen Cauldbeck (University of Liverpool, UoL)

Helen is a Research Fellow and a member of the AURPO Executive Committee. She is the manager of a radiomaterials laboratory, where she has worked for the past 7 years as well as the Department of Chemistry and Materials Innovation Factory RPS at UoL.
Within her cross-disciplinary research, Helen utilises radionuclides to provide a further understanding of materials chemistry for nanomedicine applications. She is responsible for training on radiation protection, providing advice to multiple researchers and offers radiometric analysis techniques, including the use of liquid scintillation counting, to evaluate material’s suitability for clinical translation.

Dr Oliver Preedy (Loughborough University)

Oliver is a Health and Safety Officer and is also a member of the AURPO Executive Committee. He works within the health and safety service at Loughborough specialising in radiation and chemical safety.  He has been working with open source radioactivity since 2008, including a research project at the Atomic Weapons Establishment investigating chemiluminescence in liquid scintillation counting. He has delivered training on radiation protection to post graduate students as well as delivering undergraduate lectures on analytical radiochemistry to undergraduate students.
